Why go to Russia in order to drink Absolut?

So I was in Russia and I ordered some local brand. It was less expensive, and I must admit it was very good. Nearly got some airline fuel qualities. At any rate, the people I was with was getting Absolut. Seems they were afraid they would go blind if they drank the Russian brand.

Isn't going to Russia without drinking Russian vodka like going to France and order Californian wine?
I absolutely agree. However, this was in a large bar. It was not in a small alleyway bottled on coke bottles. It seemed that a lot of people were drinking it, and it was a reputable Russian brand (however, the name eludes me).
moscovitter555, Absolut is a Swedish brand. It is fairly hyped. A rather sub-mediocre vodka with a great marketing campaign. Stolichnoya is great! And Moscovitska was the brand I bought in Russia! Thanks for making me remember. Yes, it might be targeted for the low level consumers, but it was great.

well yes youre right it is like going to france and getting californian wine. However, those people you were with were also a bit correct. You see in russia its better to buy vodka at a large store, not some little ma and pa store, just for the reason of safety. I have heard people buying the russian brand vodka (the kind that you dont see in other countries Im not talking about smirnoff or stolichnaya) anyways ive heard that people would die from drinking that stuff. No not everyone but maybe those people that you were with just didnt want to take that chance.I hope i helped a bit. I used to live in russia so i've heard the horror stories.

Dean Martin - Little Ole Wine Drinker Me Original Release

Dean Martin - Little Ole Wine Drinker Me,early memories of this tune on the radio or my parents Hi Fi playing constantly, lyrics below. I'm praying for rain in California So the grapes can grow and they can make more wine And I'm sitting in a honky in Chicago With a broken heart and a woman on my mind I matched the man behind the bar for the jukebox And the music takes me back to Tennessee And he asked who's the fool in the corner crying I say a little ole wine drinker me I came here last …
